History
The land that is now Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden was once part of a lakeside resort founded in the late 1800s by businessman Lewis Ginter. After his death, the land eventually passed to Grace Arents, his niece, who transformed it into a farm and school for orphaned children. Upon her passing, she left the property to the city of Richmond with the wish that it be used as a botanical garden.
The gardens officially opened to the public in 1984 and have since grown into one of the top botanical gardens in the United States. Today, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is celebrated not only for its natural beauty but also for its dedication to education, conservation, and community events.
